Modeling

I began modeling following my recovery from a dog attack in 2021 when I underwent significant medical treatment to reconstruct my upper lip. For many months, I felt ashamed to look in the mirror and be reminded of what happened. Through the process of trauma therapy, I learned that the lasting emotional effects of traumatic experiences can influence us in much deeper ways than we can comprehend. I learned that the shame and fear I felt from looking at myself in a mirror, interacting with dogs, and recounting my experience being hospitalized reflected a deeply rooted false sense of identity where my worth was solely based on my outward appearance and productivity.

It was through this experience that I began working with creatives to increase the representation of curve and plus-sized models in the industry, as well as to display my scars proudly. While it is true that the modeling industry values the superficial above all else, I have found that delving into these projects has fostered a celebration and acceptance of my body and scars that have been beneficial to my healing journey. I hope to use my experience to encourage other trauma survivors to celebrate their bodies as well – the vessels that carry us through this life.
